How Nightword works
Nightword is a free, no-signup nightly reflection ritual you open right in your browser. Each night it gives you one original one-line prompt against a deep-indigo star chart — something like “Tonight, let one small thing be enough.” You read it, tap to light a star, and that star joins a personal constellation that fills in, night after night, as your streak grows. The whole ritual takes about twenty seconds. The reward is the growing sky you keep.
01 The nightly ritual
There is nothing to set up and nothing to type. Open the app and tonight’s line is already there, chosen by a date-seeded index into our original corpus — so everyone who opens Nightword tonight reads the same words, and a brand-new line waits for you tomorrow. Beneath the word, a quiet tally shows how many people lit a star tonight, so you know you are not the only one showing up. Every past night’s word is kept in the Nightword archive — a good place to browse what earlier nights offered.
Tap “light tonight’s star” and a single gold-foil star ignites on your own celestial atlas. That tap is the whole action — it records tonight as kept and adds one more star to your sky. You can light one star per calendar day; re-opening the app later shows tonight as already lit, so there is never any pressure to grind.
02 Your growing constellation
Every star is one night you showed up. They are placed by a fixed, deterministic rule, so day one is a single deliberate star and night forty-seven is a genuine glowing sky — always composed, never a scatter of random dots. Your streak, longest streak, and total nights sit beside it as plain, readable numbers. Because the sky is saved locally in your browser, reopening Nightword restores your exact constellation with no login. When you want to, render it as an antique star-chart plate captioned with your streak (“47 nights”) and share it as an image or a link — that shared sky is the artifact people come back for.
03 Tips for keeping your sky
- Anchor it to something you already do. Light your star right after you plug in your phone or turn off the lamp. A streak survives on habit, not willpower.
- Keep it small. The point is one line and one tap — not journaling or solving anything. Letting the ritual stay twenty seconds is exactly why it lasts.
- A broken streak is not a lost sky. Miss a night and your current streak resets, but every star you have lit and your longest streak are kept. Just light tonight’s star and begin again.
- Watch the milestones. Nightword nudges you to share your sky at three, seven, thirty, and one hundred nights — good moments to screenshot how far you have come.
- Let the number motivate you. Once the constellation has a dozen stars, the “don’t break the sky” feeling does the rest of the work for you.
04 Frequently asked questions
- Is Nightword free? Do I need an account?
- Yes, Nightword is completely free and ad-supported. There is no account, no sign-up, and nothing to install. Your streak and your star sky are saved locally in your own browser — they live on your device, not on a server.
- Where do the nightly lines come from?
- Every prompt is a 100% original, unattributed line written for Nightword from our own corpus of thousands of one-liners. There are no famous-author quotations, no scripture, no lyrics, and no copyrighted excerpts — just original words meant to give you one small thing to sit with before sleep.
- When does the word reset, and how does the streak work?
- A new line appears each calendar day, and you can light one star per day. Lighting tonight’s star extends your current streak; the app remembers your current streak, your longest streak, and your total nights. Miss a night and the current streak resets to zero — but your longest streak and every star you have already lit are kept forever. There is no back-filling missed nights.
- What does the constellation actually track?
- Each gold star is one night you showed up. The constellation is a deterministic map: the same number of lit nights always produces the same composed sky, so it reads as an intentional star-chart plate at one star and at two hundred. It is a private “look how many nights I have kept” artifact — not a score, a leaderboard, or a mood log.
- Is Nightword therapy or mental-health advice?
- No. Nightword is a gentle reflection ritual for entertainment and wind-down only. It is not therapy, diagnosis, or medical or mental-health advice. If you are struggling, please reach out to a qualified professional or a local support line.
